Dubbed as the “Jewel of Vancouver Island”, and the “sandcastle capital of Canada”, the city of Parksville combines urban lifestyle with the best of sand, sea, and outdoor recreation that defines the communities of Vancouver Island’s Oceanside region (which includes Nanaimo, Parksville, Nanoose Bay, and Qualicum Beach among others). The city sits right along the old Island Highway, or Highway 19A, the main thoroughfare that runs throughout the Island from north to south, connecting Parksville to hub city of Nanaimo, the quiet, breathtaking Nanoose Bay community, and, on its northern side, to the scenic town of Qualicum Beach. The Parksville/Qualicum area also hosts one of the four campuses of Vancouver Island University: the Parksville Civic & Technology Centre.
Parksville is located on the East side of Vancouver Island in an area that levels off from the more hilly terrain with a moderate slope upwards from the ocean. This creates a beautiful open feeling with mountain ranges as the backdrop to the West and two large breath-taking sandy beaches to the East. These beaches offer great options for families and a beach line that runs for multiple kilometers. The beach also extends out nearly a kilometer wide at low tide. The Parksville Community Beach is home to the famous World Championship Sand Sculpting competitions in the summer.
Next door to Parksville is the Town of Qualicum Beach which also boasts its own beautiful beachfront and a controlled village feel to the downtown section. The town does not allow big box stores and maintains an architectural esthetic with boutiques and shops that attract visitors, television productions, and one of the largest Canadian outdoor car shows.
