About Parksville

The city of Parksville is a popular resort and vacation destination for tourists and outdoor recreation enthusiasts as well as an attraction for both retirees and young professionals working remotely or online, looking to buy a home in a laid-back city that seems to be all about beaches, playing in the sand and year-round outdoor activities such as golfing, hiking, and mountain biking. Parksville is sometimes called the Canadian equivalent of the French Riviera, long famed and romanticised as a resort paradise frequented by aristocrats, royalty, and famous artists.

Dubbed as the “Jewel of Vancouver Island”, and the “sandcastle capital of Canada”, the city of Parksville combines urban lifestyle with the best of sand, sea, and outdoor recreation that defines the communities of Vancouver Island’s Oceanside region (which includes Nanaimo, Parksville, Nanoose Bay, and Qualicum Beach among others). The city sits right along the old Island Highway, or Highway 19A, the main thoroughfare that runs throughout the Island from north to south, connecting Parksville to hub city of Nanaimo, the quiet, breathtaking Nanoose Bay community, and, on its northern side, to the scenic town of Qualicum Beach. The Parksville/Qualicum area also hosts one of the four campuses of Vancouver Island University: the Parksville Civic & Technology Centre.

Qualicum Beach is a quaint, seaside town with a strong historical tradition and a distinct First Nations presence. Aside from the mild climate, beaches, and the warm, small town atmosphere, homes in Qualicum Beach may also be eligible for the Home Owner Grant Act *. Despite its size and a population of roughly 8, 700 residents, the town is recognized as one of the top growing communities in Canada, Qualicum Beach is characterised by a thriving arts and culture community, centered around the Old School House Arts Centre and the seasonal offerings of the Bard to Broadway theatre during the summer, and the ECHO Players at the Village Theatre during Fall to Spring.

A distinct lack of large chain stores and lots of locally owned boutique shops dotting the pedestrian-friendly downtown area gives Qualicum Beach the quaint character of a historic town, and a shopper’s paradise for unique items. The town derives its name, “Qualicum”, from the Pentlatch language, a currently extinct Salishan language native to Vancouver Island. The name translates to “where the dog salmon run”, or chum salmon. Qualicum Beach still remains a part of the traditional territory of the Qualicum First Nation Band.
